Gangubai Kathiawadi REVIEW:
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” which takes place entirely against this gritty backdrop of Mumbai, tells the story of many young women who were sold off to brothels for a few hundred rupees, entirely through the eyes of its protagonist Gangubai, who plays the role of Gangubai (Alia Bhatt).
In this romantic comedy, Ganga (Varun Kapoor) is a starry-eyed and naïve young woman deceived by her own boyfriend Ramnik (Varun Kapoor) into eloping with the promise that he would pave the way for her to become a successful Bollywood actress. Over many years, Kamathipura becomes her home, the brothel girls her family, and the whole city of Kamathipura becomes her territory. She faces several obstacles, including opponents and a societal shame, which forces her to summon her inner warrior to survive.

The film’s strength is how it portrays Gangu’s character’s transformation as she progresses through several periods of her life.
As the bosslady in a world full of brothels and greedy men, Alia Bhatt steals the show from the beginning to the end of the film. One unmistakable and peculiar thing about all of this is that Alia’s physical appearance, which is constantly dressed in elegant whites, stays unaltered throughout the tale.

Even in his short appearance as Rahim Lala, Ajay Devgn makes a lasting impression. As Gangu’s love interest, Shantanu Maheshwari gives a strong performance, and the bittersweet moments between Gangu and him are some of the most memorable scenes in the film.
Bhansali’s distinctive style, some wonderfully conceived, sad moments are executed with grace and flair; yet, the storey does not go deeply into any element of Gangu’s life. The film expertly pays tribute to a bygone period via movie posters and actor photos from that era that are pasted all over the place. Each song is expertly and vibrantly visualised — even as Gangu stands out like a beacon of white light in the middle of it all.
